Court again orders Yodobashi to compensate a temp

The Tokyo High Court on March 8 upheld the lower court ruling and ordered major electrical appliance retailer Yodobashi Camera, a staffing agency, and employees of both companies to pay a total of 5.6 million yen as indemnification to a temporary worker for physical abuse he suffered, rejecting Yodobashi's appeal.

When the temp was working at Yodobashi Camera's cellular phone department from November 2002 to March 2003, the employees of Yodobashi and the staffing agency repeatedly assaulted him on the grounds that he failed to smile to customers. He received severe injuries that took two months to heal.

He was sent to Yodobashi through two companies: the one which originally employed him and sent him to the mobile phone company DDI Pocket (currently WILLCOM) and the latter that sent him to Yodobashi. This was an illegal practice.

After the court decision, he commented, "I want the slavish situation surrounding temps to be addressed."
