Miyazaki mayor says 'No' to U.S. military exercises Miyazaki City Mayor Tsumura Shigemitsu in the city assembly on March 7 expressed his opposition to the plan to allow U.S.forces to hold training exercises with F-15 fighter jets at the Air Self-Defense Force Nyutabaru Base in the prefecture. He made this statement in answer to a question by a Japanese Communist Party representative in the city assembly. The mayor said that the city is a member of the liaison council of municipalities surrounding the Nyutabaru base opposing the use of the Nyutabaru base by U.S. forces. The mayor said, "Protecting citizens' lives and properties is my priority task." Emphasizing that residents' concerns about noise and possible accidents have not been dispelled, he flatly stated, "I cannot accept the relocation plan." He also complained about the central government failure to consider local opinions. - Akahata, March 8, 2006 |
