Tokyo to bid for 2016 Olympics - JCP opposes

The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on March 8 adopted a resolution by majority vote of the Liberal Democratic, Democratic, and Komei parties, to express its support for participating in a bid for hosting the 2016 Olympic Games. The Japanese Communist Party voted against.

Prior to the vote, JCP assembly member Matsumura Tomoaki took the floor and stated, "The JCP does not oppose the Olympic Game itself, but opposes hosting the game if it will provide a pretext for large-scale urban development projects and environmental destruction.

Referring to Governor Ishihara Shintaro's stated position to promote road construction and large-scale developments as well as a joint military-civilian use of U.S. Yokota air base by using the Olympic Games as the driving force, Matsumura stated, "It is unacceptable to push ahead with huge unnecessary projects while cutting public welfare programs.
