Yamaguchi governor: 'I understand Iwakuni sentiment' Iwakuni Mayor Ihara Katsusuke on March 15 visited Yamaguchi Governor Nii Sekinari to ask for his understanding of Iwakuni city's intention to request the central government cancel the plan to relocate a U.S. carrier-based airwing from the U.S. Atsugi base to the Iwakuni base based on the March 12 referendum result. The governor said, "I understand well the sentiment of Iwakuni City." After the meeting, the governor said that he will visit Tokyo next week to convey Yamaguchi Prefecture's intention to the government." On the previous day, the Iwakuni City Assembly confirmed the policy to reject the relocation plan and to request the government to consider measures to ease the suffering of residents living near the Atsugi base. - Akahata, March 16, 2006 |
