Women public figures call for defense of Article 9

On April 8, 20 women public figures took a microphone in the street of downtown Tokyo to call on passes-by to defend the war-renouncing Article 9. Some 100 members distributed flyers in opposition to an adverse revision of the Constitution. This action was held by the WomenÕs Article 9 Association.

Music critic Yukawa Reiko talked about her father and brother who were killed in the war and said, ŌLet us protect Article 9 as our treasure.Ķ

Speakers included Ejiri Mihoko (trustee of YWCA Japan), Kawashima Kasumiko (vice president of the National Federation of Regional WomenÕs Organizations), Takada Kimiko (president of the New Japan WomenÕs Association), Ishii Ikuko (vice chair of the Japanese Communist Party), Okazaki Tomiko (Democratic Party of Japan House of Councilors member), and Doi Takako (Social Democratic Party member and former House of Representatives speaker).

The WomenÕs Article 9 Association was founded on February 23, 2005 in order to increase the movement to defend Article 9 among women.
