Okinawa City mayoral election affects outcome of U.S. bases realignment: Shii

In Okinawa City on April 7, some 2,000 residents participated in a rally in support of Tomon Mitsuko, a progressive candidate in the mayoral election slated for April 23.

Tomon is backed by the Japanese Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party, the Social Mass Party, and the Democratic Party of Japan, as well as the Liberal League.

In the rally, Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo delivered a speech, stating, ÒThis election to choose the representative of OkinawaÕs second largest city is of national significance because it will affect the outcome of the planned U.S. military realignment in Japan.Ó Pointing out that in order to block the strengthening of U.S. bases, Okinawa needs a mayor who stands at the forefront of the struggle bringing together all Okinawans and local municipalities, Shii said, ÒThe other candidate, fully supported by the government and the Liberal Democratic Party, does not represent Okinawans. With the election of Ms. Tomon, let us give our verdict against the realignment of U.S. forces.Ó

Speakers included SDP President Fukushima Mizuho, Ginowan Mayor Iha Yoichi, as well as representatives of parties supporting Tomon.

Candidate Tomon said, ÒIf elected as the first woman mayor in Okinawa Prefecture, IÕd like to make sincere efforts to create a city where residents can live with dreams and hope.Ó
