Okinawa governor rejects new U.S. base plan Okinawa Governor Inamine Keiichi on April 8 visited Defense Agency Director General Nukaga Fukushiro to express his opposition to the plan agreed between the government and Nago City to construct a new U.S. base on the shoreline of U.S. Camp Schwab in Nago City. Inamine said, ÒWe will stick to the prefectureÕs stance.Ó He firmly declined to meet with Prime Minister Koizumi JunÕichiro at this stage. Inamine has consistently maintained his opposition to the ÒshorelineÓ plan on the grounds that the government provided the prefecture with no clear reason why it changed the original plan approved by the Cabinet in 1999 to build a base in the sea off the Henoko district of Nago City. - Akahata, April 9, 2006 |
