JCP calls for political responsibility to be invoked to relieve all Minamata disease patients May 1st marked the 50th year since the Minamata disease outbreak, which was referred to as the first case of environmental disruption caused by industrial pollution that was officially confirmed. Many Minamata disease patients are saying, "Minamata disease is not something to be remembered as a past affair. Every Minamata disease patient today must be relieved." In Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture in western Japan, a memorial service was held on the same day attended by about 1,300 people, including Minamata disease patients.
