'We need more nurses in hospitals' Nurses and doctors took to the streets in Tokyo on May 13 demanding that the government take steps to increase the number of nurses in hospitals. Stating that the working conditions at hospitals are too tight to protect human lives, about 250 nurses and doctors called for the present state standard for the maximum number of patients per nurse be reduced to four. Dressed in their white uniforms, they appealed to passers-by in front of Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro stations. Listening to the medical workers calling for more time to pay attention to each patient, many passers-by signed their names in support of the petition to the government to increase the number of nurses at medical facilities. - Akahata, May 14, 2006 |
