Zama mayor reiterates opposition to Japan-U.S. military realignment

Zama Mayor Hoshino Katsuji and representatives of Zama's Council against Relocation of U.S. Army Command to U.S. Camp Zama situated in the city on May 11 once again reminded the government their opposition to the plan to realign U.S. forces in Japan as agreed upon between Japan and the United States, specifically concerning the role of Camp Zama.

The mayor, the city assembly chair, and representatives of the city federation of residents' associations visited the Foreign Ministry and the Defense Agency to convey their opposition.

They urged the government to take comprehensive measures to prevent U.S. Camp Zama from being perpetuated, stressing that the government should seek support from local communities through negotiations.

Hiroshima Governor Fujita Yuzan on May 10 expressed his reluctance to support the Japan-U.S. agreement that includes the relocation of U.S. carrier-borne aircraft units to the U.S. Marine Corps Iwakuni Air Station in Yamaguchi Prefecture (near Hiroshima).

In his letter to the defense and foreign ministries, Fujita demanded that the government take measures against noise pollution, accidents, and other burdens caused by the U.S. base.
