Religious Council for Peace issues call for defense of the Constitution and Education Law The Japan Religious Council for Peace composed of various religious sects has issued an appeal calling on all people of faith and the general public to redouble efforts to defend the Constitution and the Fundamental Law of Education. The council, led by Suzuki Tesshu, is an organization of Buddhists, Christians, Shintoists, and believers of Tenrikyo and new religions, works in pursuit of world peace and the happiness of humankind regardless of differences of religion. It will mark its 45th founding anniversary next year. The appeal was adopted by the organization's national directors meeting on May 22 and 23. It warned that adverse revision of the Constitution and the Fundamental Law of Education will again turn Japan into a "war-fighting nation" by infringing on the freedom of thought. In the discussion, participants spoke about local activities, including the putting up of posters carrying the names and opinions of those who support the Article 9 Association's Appeal (Osaka), and preparing for a speech to be given in Gifu by a former Defense Agency secretariat director general who expressed opposition to constitutional revision. - Akahata, May 24, 2006 |
