U.S. Aegis enters Sukumo Bay Port

U.S. Aegis missile destroyer Russell on May 24 made a call at Sukumo Bay Port in Kochi Prefecture.

Near the quay, more than 150 residents, including members of the Japanese Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party, and trade unions, were protesting against the Russell's entry into the port, holding signs that read "Go Away."

The United States had explained that the Russell's port call is aimed at promoting friendship as well as providing for crewmembers' recreation, but Russell Commander James W. Kilby at a press conference said that the main purpose of the port call is to show how the United States is committed to Japan and the rest of Asia.

Asked about the meaning of commitment, Kilby answered that based on the lasting Japan-U.S. alliance, Japan and the U.S. need to cooperate together globally.
