U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Lincoln calls at Sasebo The U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln entered U.S. Naval Sasebo Port in Nagasaki Prefecture on May 25, following its "Fall Eagle" exercises with the South Korean Navy and with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. At the press conference, Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group Commander Rear Adm. JW Goodwin stated that the port call is also aimed at ensuring joint exercises between his group and JMSDF ships so that both may more effectively carry out operations in the fight against terrorism. At a protest rally held in the city, Yamashita Chiaki, Sasebo Council against A and H Bombs secretary, said, "The Abraham Lincoln's visit at this time is aimed at preparing Japan to take part in U.S. wars." Participants shouted "No to port call of U.S. nuclear carrier Lincoln; don't integrate the SDF with U.S. forces; and defend Article 9 of the Constitution!" - Akahata, May 26, 2006 |
