World Conference against A and H Bombs Organizing Committee holds general meeting The Organizing Committee of the 2006 World Conference against A and H Bombs on May 31 held its general meeting in Tokyo and adopted an appeal calling for efforts to ensure a success of the 2006 World Conference to be held from August 2 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Taka Hiroshi, a co-chair of the Organizing Committee, said that the 2006 World Conference is aimed at influencing international politics to take up the task of abolishing nuclear weapons by further boosting actions and cooperation in and out of Japan following the last year's World Conference marking the 60th anniversary of A-bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Looking towards the 2006 World Conference, Taka called on the movement to step up the signature-collection campaign titled, "For Swift Abolition of Nuclear Weapons," so as to deliver five million signatures to the United Nations. With the main theme, "A Nuclear Weapons-free, Peaceful and Just World," the 2006 World Conference and related events will take place on August 2-9 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. - Akahata June 1, 2006 |
