Hibakusha again urge the state to recognize their diseases as Atomic bomb-caused Forty-one hibakusha in 12 prefectures, including Tokyo, on June 9 filed applications for a certificate that they have diseases caused by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is the fourth concerted hibakusha action organized since March at the call of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo). Hibakusha have filed suits with 13 district courts calling for the state recognition of their being patients with illnesses caused by atomic bomb radiation. The number of hibakusha who have applied for such recognition has reached 133. Of the approximately 250,000 surviving hibakusha in Japan, only about 2,000, or 0.8 percent, are recognized as patients with A-bomb diseases. - Akahata, June 10, 2006 |
