Chitose residents rally against U.S. F-15 relocation

Local assembly members of various political affiliations and residents of Chitose City in Hokkaido held a rally on June 11 against the planned relocation of flight exercises of U.S. F-15 fighter jets from the U.S. Kadena Air Base in Okinawa to an Air Self-Defense Force base in their city.

About 1,600 participants called on the national, prefectural, and city governments to take seriously a petition with 10,000 signatures in opposition to the relocation of the U.S. military flight exercise.

On behalf of the Japanese Communist Party, House of Representatives member Akamine Seiken said, "Doing whatever the U.S. tells it to do, the Japanese government cannot be entrusted with the residents' safety. With close cooperation between residents in Okinawa and Chitose, let us increase the movement to block the planned relocation."

Representatives of Democratic and Social Democratic parties also participated in the rally.
