Workers demand minimum wage increase About 300 workers calling for a drastic increase in the minimum wage held a sit-in in front of the Health, Labor, and Welfare Ministry on June 23 when the Ministry's Central Minimum Wage Council started discussing regional minimum wages. Pointing out that the 714 yen set in Tokyo is the highest minimum hourly wage in Japan, Bannai Mitsuo, secretary general of the National Confederation of Trade Unions (Zenroren), said, "It is urgent to raise the minimum wage to guarantee all workers' decent living conditions." One of the participants, a 45-year-old woman from Kanagawa Prefecture, had a part-time job for more than 10 years with an hourly wage of 800 yen. She said, "In our area, many employees set an hourly wage at nearly same rate as the regional minimum wage of 712 yen. This minimum payment must be increased in order to prevent further wage cuts." - Akahata, June 24, 2006 |
