Local JCP requests JOC not to choose Fukuoka for Olympics

All six Japanese Communist Party members of the Fukuoka City Assembly, accompanied by JCP Upper House member Nihi Sohei, visited the Japanese Olympic Committee in Tokyo on July 6 and requested it not to choose Fukuoka City as Japan's candidate to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

The JCP Fukuoka City Assembly members group stressed that the city, which faces huge deficits, does not deserve to host the Olympics. They pointed out that more than 60 percent of local residents who responded to an opinion poll expressed their opposition to their city's plan to host the games.

A JOC official emphasized that residents' support is indispensable for the success of the Olympics, and said, "It is said that a candidate city needs the support of 70 to 80 percent of its residents."

Tokyo and Fukuoka City officially announced their bids to host the 2016 Olympic Games and submitted outlines of their respective hosting plans, and the JOC started its process of choosing a candidate, including conducting on-site research.
