High court orders state to compensate for noise pollution

The Tokyo High Court on July 13 ordered the government to pay about 4 billion yen in compensation to about 4,800 people suffering from aircraft noise at the U.S. Atsugi Naval Air Facility in Kanagawa Prefecture.

The ruling upheld the decision the Yokohama District Court took in 2002. The amount of compensation is the highest ever awarded in a court case over noise pollution caused by a military base.

The high court dismissed the plaintiffs' demands for compensation for suffering they anticipate in the future, following the lower court decision.
