Local residents protest strengthening of U.S. live ammunition exercises

About 100 local residents on July 16 held a rally in front of the gate of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force Ojojihara training site in Miyagi Prefecture in opposition to the U.S. live-fire exercises to be held at the site.

The liaison council against the U.S. military relocation and Japan-U.S. joint exercises organized this action.

On behalf of the organizer, Miyagi Prefectural Federation of Trade Unions (Miyagi-roren) President Ishigaki Atsushi said, "Let's further increase our movement against the strengthening of U.S. invasion exercises and keep a watch on them!"

Japanese Communist Party Miyagi Prefectural Committee Chair Nakajima Yasuhiro expressed his determination to carry out an all out struggle in solidarity with other struggles across Japan.

Protesters marched in demonstration through the area surrounding the GSDF training site, calling on U.S. forces to go home.

The U.S. live-fire exercises will take place on eight days between July 19 and 30.
