Details of World Conference against A & H Bombs announced

The Organizing Committee of the World Conference against A & H Bombs on July 24 published details of the 2006 World Conference, which will be held under the theme, "A Nuclear Weapon-Free, Peaceful and Just World."

The World Conference will take place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki from August 2 to August 9.

Taka Hiroshi, secretary general of the Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) said that this year's conference will be an opportunity to further develop the anti-nuclear peace movement on a global scale and to push the United Nations to abolish nuclear weapons.

The following five representatives of governments and inter-governmental organizations will participate in the conference: Ulises Canchola Gutierrez, director general in charge of the UN System, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico; Ehab Fawzy, deputy assistant minister for international political affairs and disarmament, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt; Shahrul Ikram, undersecretary, Multilateral Political Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia; Herminio Lopez Diaz, charge d'affaires of Cuba to Japan; and Mohamed Ezzeldine Abdel-Moneim, special advisor on disarmament and strategic affairs, League of Arab States.

Mexico and Egypt are members of the New Agenda Coalition making efforts for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Malaysia and Cuba are active in the Non-Aligned Movement.

NGO representatives and individuals from 19 countries, including nuclear testing victims in Tahiti and the Marshal Islands, and representatives of the Women's International Democratic Federation, the International Network of Museums for Peace, the World Peace Council, and the International Association of Democratic Lawyers will participate in the World Conference as overseas delegates.
