JCP puts up a joint candidate for Okinawa governor The Japanese Communist Party Okinawa Prefectural Committee on September 18 decided to put up Itokazu Keiko, a House of Councilors member (independent), for the Okinawa gubernatorial election slated for November 19. The JCP will seek to support Itokazu as the joint candidate of five opposition parties (JCP, Okinawa Social Mass Party, Social Democratic Party, Democratic Party, and Liberal League) opposing the construction of a new U.S. base in Nago City. JCP Okinawa Prefectural Committee Chair Akamine Seiken, a House of Representatives member, in a statement stated, "We decided to put up Itokazu, attaching importance to the unity of the opposition parties and prefectural residents in order to bring about a governor who will reject the construction of a new U.S. base." - Akahata, September 19, 2006 |
