One million anti-nuclear signatures to be submitted to U.N. The Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Gensuikyo) on September 29 held a meeting in Tokyo to entrust its delegation visiting the U.N. Headquarters with more than 1 million signatures calling for the swift abolition of nuclear weapons to be submitted to the U.N. Launched in January this year, the signature collecting campaign "For a Swift Abolition of Nuclear Weapons" has been conducted in Japan and in many parts of the world. Representing the Steering Committee of the World Conference against A & H Bombs Organizing Committee, Sato Mitsuo announced that 1,018,253 signatures including that of 503 municipal heads and 322 local assembly chairs have been collected in Japan as of September 29. It is planned that some of the signatures will be received by the chair of the U.N. General Assembly First Committee. The delegation was to leave for New York on October 1. The 31 delegates include several atomic-bomb survivors who are planning to talk about their experiences while in the U.S. Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Japan Gensuikyo Secretary General Taka Hiroshi stressed the importance of the delegation's planned activities to urge the U.N. and governments to conclude an international convention for the abolition of nuclear weapons and help further turn world politics toward peace. - Akahata, September 30, 2006 |
