Opposition parties agree to join forces to block bill adversely revising education law The Japanese Communist, Democratic, Democratic Social, and People's New parties held on October 26 a meeting in which the JCP Secretariat Head and general secretaries of the other three parties agreed to join forces to block the enactment in the current Diet session of a bill to adversely revise the Fundamental Law of Education. At a press conference later in the day, JCP Secretariat Head Ichida Tadayoshi said that the agreement has an important bearing on the Diet procedure regarding the bill. The opposition leaders also agreed on the following points: - denounce the argument to encourage a debate on Japan's nuclear armament put forward by Foreign Minister Aso Taro and other officials of the government and the Liberal Democratic Party; - promote cooperation among the four parties to grill the government on the widening social gap, bid-riggings carried out at the initiative of government officials, and the investment scandal involving Bank of Japan Governor Fukui Toshihiko; - make all-out efforts for the victory of oppositions' joint candidate Itokazu Keiko in the Okinawa gubernatorial election. - Akahata, October 27, 2006 |
