More than 10,000 signatures collected in Yokosuka for referendum on U.S. nuclear-powered carrier homeporting More than 10,000 signatures have been collected as of November 30 in Yokosuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture for a petition calling for a referendum on whether to allow the permanent deployment of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base in 2008. More than 7,200 (one fiftieth of the eligible voters living in the city) signatures need to be collected by December 10 in order for the referendum to take place. Lawyer Goto Masahiko, co-representative of the Association for the Success of the Referendum, stated, "The more signatures we collect, the more we strengthen democracy in Yokosuka, forcing the mayor, the city assembly, and the U.S. Navy to change their position on the nuclear-powered carrier's homeporting." He went on to say that the organization intends to collect as many as more than 20,000 signatures. - Akahata, December 1, 2006 |
