All 20 JCP candidates win 8 municipal assembly elections All 20 Japanese Communist Party candidates won the local assembly elections taking place in five cities and three towns on February 4. In these elections, the JCP called on voters to increase the JCP seats in order to defend the living standards of local residents and social welfare services from the attacks of the central and local governments. In the election of Shimonoseki City Assembly (Yamaguchi Prefecture) whose number of seats was slashed to 38 from 107, all five incumbent JCP candidates won, receiving 1,841 more votes than in the 2005 House of Representatives proportional representation election. With this, the JCP assembly members group obtained the right to submit bills to the assembly. In the election of Yaizu City Assembly (Shizuoka Prefecture), where the number of seats was also reduced (by five to 21), all three incumbent JCP candidates won, receiving 2.3 times more votes than in the Lower House election. The JCP increased the percentage of its members in this local assembly from 11.53 percent to 14.28 percent. In the election of Suzaka City Assembly (Nagano Prefecture), where the number of seats was reduced by four to 20, both the incumbent JCP candidates won, increasing the percentage of JCP members from 8.38 percent to 10 percent. - Akahata, February 6, 2007 |
