JCP calls for swift relief for former war orphans' misery Japanese Communist Party Dietmembers on February 2 made representations to Prime Minister Abe Shinzo calling for a swift and full-scale resolution to the problem faced by former war orphans left in China after WWII. They visited the Prime Minister's Official Residence and met Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Suzuki Seiji. The JCP members urged the government to apologize and compensate former war orphans, establish a new benefit system, and take measures to assist the second- and third-generations of former war orphans. They also called on the government to have regular meetings with plaintiffs and lawyers of lawsuits seeking state compensation for the former war orphans. JCP House of Councilors member Koike Akira demanded a swift government response, stating, "Former war orphans are aging, and have many medical problems. Due to their inability to communicate in Japanese, they tend to isolate themselves from society." - Akahata, February 3, 2007 |
