Okinawafs local assemblies adopt resolutions to protest against U.S. Marinefs rape case
The municipal assemblies of Okinawafs Chatan Town and Okinawa City, where a rape of a 14-year-old girl by a U.S. Marine took place, adopted unanimous resolutions on February 13 in protest against the crime. The Naha City Assembly also unanimously adopted a similar resolution on February 12.
The Okinawa City Assembly resolution stated, gThis is an extremely atrocious crime trampling on womenfs human rights. We sympathize with the victim and her family members and feel that this crime is absolutely unforgivable.h
The Chatan Town Assembly resolution reads, gWe have repeatedly requested the U.S. forces and authorities concerned to tighten discipline and take measures to prevent future crimes. Despite our efforts, another tragic incident occurred. This is an unforgivable serious incident and we are indignant.h
After the adoption of the resolutions, members of these two local assemblies visited the U.S. Consulate in Okinawa and the Okinawa Defense Bureau and urged them to issue an apology and offer compensation to the victim, thoroughly educate U.S. personnel, and make clear who is responsible for the incident.
