Yokosuka residents hold action against U.S. nuclear-powered warship
A group of residents of Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, held its third demonstration in protest against the arrival of the U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George Washington to the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base on December 7.
About 100 people, including musicians, mothers and children, marched in demonstration to Beethovenfs Ninth Symphony.
The George Washington was open to the public on December 6 as well as were other base facilities at the Yokosuka Base.
On the same day, about 20 members of the Association for Success of the Referendum on the Deployment of the Nuclear-powered Aircraft Carrier took to the streets and informed people visiting the aircraft carrier how dangerous the George Washington is.
In front of two train stations near the Yokosuka Base, they appealed to the public that the metropolitan area will be exposed to possible nuclear accidents caused by the nuclear-powered warship. They distributed more than 1,000 flyers in one hour.
The George Washington was permanently deployed to Yokosuka on September 25. - Akahata, December 7 & 8, 2008
