Nago City protests over explosion of dud shell on U.S. base Okinawa's Nago City Assembly on March 27 unanimously adopted a resolution in protest against the explosion of a dud shell on U.S. Camp Schwab. On March 24, a U.S. serviceman died and two others were injured due to the explosion when they were working on removing unexploded bombs in Camp Schwab. The U.S. Marine Corps announced the incident does not affect anyone outside the U.S. base. The resolution criticized the announcement as "inappropriate" as the accident shocked residents and caused their anxiety. It demanded that the U.S. Forces establish the cause of the accident and take preventive measures as well as release their findings. - Akahata, March 28, 2009 |
