3,000 farmers hold rally opposing Japan-U.S. FTA talks About 3,000 family farmers on August 12 assembled at Hibiya Amphitheater in Tokyo in a rally opposing FTA (Free Trade Agreement) negotiations between Japan and the U.S. The rally was called by the organizing committee consisting of the Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-ZENCHU) and forestry, and fishery industries' organizations. Rally participants adopted a resolution demanding that the Japan-U.S. FTA negotiations be cancelled because it would damage Japan's agriculture and local economies. Speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, JA-ZENCHU President Moteki Mamoru expressed his determination to stop the Japan-U.S. FTA negotiations. Near the Hibiya Amphitheater, Japanese Communist Party members handed out to participants JCP leaflets on JCP's agriculture policy for the upcoming House of Representatives general election which opposes the Japan-U.S. FTA negotiations and provides a concrete plan to revitalize Japan's agriculture. - Akahata, August 13, 2009 |
