Reformist-backed candidate will work for base-free Okinawa

Endorsed by progressive, democratic organizations, individuals, and the Japanese Communist Party, 58-year-old physician, Iju Tadayuki, will run for the Okinawa constituency in the House of Councilors election.

On May 15, the Association for a Peaceful, Rich Okinawa without Military Bases held an inauguration ceremony in Naha City. There, Iju signed a policy agreement with the association consisting of a wide range of individuals, groups, and the JCP.

JCP Secretary General Ichida Tadayoshi stated that the current situation in Okinawa required a candidate backed jointly by progressive forces.

Iju stated, gFor 65 years after WWII, Okinawa has suffered from the presence of the U.S. military bases. In the recent massive rally taken part in by 90,000 Okinawans, I renewed my pledge that it is we, the Okinawans, who will make the decision on which path we will proceed to take to create a future for ourselves. The rally was an opportunity for us to reaffirm our determination to work for a peaceful, rich Okinawa without military bases. With help from the power of the people, I will proactively fight in the election to break through the cowardly attitude of the Japanese government and the arrogance of the United States.h

gI will make efforts to lead Japan to establish a peaceful and friendly relationship with the United States without military bases in Okinawa and will commit myself to achieve this aim so that Japan can show to the world that it is abiding by its pacifist Constitution,h he added.
