Ruling parties defeated The ruling Democratic and People's New parties suffered a big loss in the July 11 House of Councilors election. The DPJ lost 10 seats in the 54 seats up for re-election and no PNP candidate was reelected. As a result, the ruling bloc lost its majority in the House of Councilors. The Liberal Democratic Party obtained seven seats more than the DPJ. The number of votes cast for the DPJ decreased to 18,450,140 from the previous 23,256,247 while the votes cast for the LDP fell to 14,071,671 from 16,544,761. The Komei Party obtained nine seats (the previous 11). The number of seats held by the Social Democratic Party dropped to two. The Your Party won in three prefectural districts and obtained seven seats in the proportional representation constituency. - Akahata, July 13, 2010
