Shii meets with Korean ambassador
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on October 13 received a visit by South Korean Ambassador to Japan Lee Joon-gyu at the JCP head office.
Lee, who assumed the office this summer, said he will work hard to further develop Japan-South Korean relations and voiced his expectations for the JCP to keep engaging in active exchanges with South Korea in many fields.
Shii welcomed the ambassador’s visit and talked about his experiences of associating with the South Korean government, political parties, and universities after he first visited South Korea as a JCP leader in 2006. In addition, he said he will keep working to expand ties between the JCP and South Korea.
Handing the ambassador a Korean language version of the JCP proposal to create a framework of peace in Northeast Asia, Shii explained the main purpose of this initiative and exchanged views with Lee on the North Korean nuclear issue, the issue of historical interpretation, and regional issues.
Talking about the history, Shii said he hopes that former victims of the so-called wartime Japanese military “comfort women” will restore their human dignity and that solutions will be brought about in a way all of them can agree with.
