JCP Chair Shii meets with Nicaraguan ambassador

June 26, 2009
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on June 25 held talks with Nicaraguan Ambassador to Japan Saúl Arana Castellón at the JCP head office.

The ambassador handed Shii a copy of the opening speech President of the U.N. General Assembly Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, ex-minister of foreign affairs of Nicaragua, delivered at a U.N. high-level summit meeting that began on the previous day to discuss issues on “World Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Development”.

He emphasized that the keynote of this conference is “the position that the current crisis should be resolved by reflecting the opinions of not only the G-8 or G-20 countries but all 192 member states of the United Nations.”

Given the fact that many developing nations are experiencing severely negative impacts from the present crisis although they are not responsible for it, Shii said, “The way to find solutions with input from these governments meets the demand of today’s changing world.”

Shii then explained the letter he had sent to U.S. President Barack Obama to call on him to start international negotiations on a treaty banning nuclear weapons in response to his anti-nuclear weapons address in Prague.

Ambassador Arana said that such an effort will hopefully bear substantial results.

Shii expressed his hope to continue working with the Nicaraguan government on various issues including nuclear disarmament and world peace.
