Zenroren calls for regulations on fixed term employment

October 31, 2010
The National Confederation of Trade Unions’ (Zenroren) center for non-regular workers on October 30 held its annual meeting in Tokyo and adopted an action plan aiming to improve non-regular workers’ working conditions and create regulations on fixed-term employment contracts.

Izutsu Momoko, secretary general of the center, stressed the need to urge the government to immediately resume thoroughgoing Diet deliberations on the bill to revise the Worker Dispatch Law.

Regarding the issue of regulations on fixed-term employment contracts on which the Labor Ministry’s panel recently began discussions, Izutsu said that under the situation in which the financial circles’ strong opposition to the regulations is apparent, it is important to increase public awareness about this issue through Zenroren’s movement calling for establishment of rules to protect workers.

A delegation from the Hirakata City workers’ union of Osaka reported that the union won a high court order stating that even non-regular workers are eligible to bonuses, including a retirement bonus, if their labor practices are equivalent to that of full-time workers.
