A survey conducted by the NHK Hiroshima bureau shows that about 70% of young Americans think that "nuclear weapons are not necessary".
NHK Hiroshima surveyed young people aged between 18 and 34 years old on the Internet who live in Japan and in the United States. According to the survey, regarding the need for "nuclear weapons", about 85% of Japanese respondents said such weapons are "unnecessary", and 70.3% of respondents in the U.S. had the same response.
Asked about the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 75 years ago, 41.6% of the American youth surveyed answered that the bombings were "unforgivable", exceeding the 31.3% who considered it as "needed".
In a U.S. opinion poll five years ago, 47% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 "justified" the A-bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Takahara Takao, professor at Meiji Gakuin University, pointed out that young people's awareness about nuclear weapons has changed a lot over the past decade thanks to a growing interest in peace education.
Setsuko Thurlow, an 88-year-old Hiroshima Hibakusha who now resides in Canada, said, "Upon seeing the change in attitudes of young people, I feel that the time when I can have hope is here at last."
