The Japanese Communist Party Commission on Climate Change held its first meeting in the Diet building on November 30 with JCP Dietmembers participating.
Commission Chair Kasai Akira (House of Representatives) delivered the opening speech, calling on JCP Dietmembers, representatives of the party with "the 2030 strategy" which is aimed at cutting CO2 emissions by 50-60% by 2030, to take a leading role in Diet debates on climate change and to make efforts to increase cooperation with the general public.
At the meeting, lawyer Asaoka Mie of an NPO called "Kiko Network", who took part in the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Glasgow in Scotland, was invited to give a report on the achievement of COP26 and future tasks as well as on the Japanese government response.
Asaoka explained in detail about the significance of the agreement reached in COP26 to "try to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels". On the other hand, Japan's Prime Minister Kishida in his speech at the COP26 Summit failed to mention anything about either the "limit to 1.5C" or about maintaining coal-fired power generation at home, according to Asaoka. She said Kishida's speech seemed to "run counter to the global effort to tackle climate change".
She pointed out that the government basic energy plan which clings to reliance on coal and nuclear power should be reviewed without delay.
