JCP secures 909 seats in 2nd round of nationwide simultaneous local elections

April 25, 2023

In the second round of the 2023 nationwide simultaneous local elections held on April 23, the Japanese Communist Party won 909 seats (94 seats in Tokyo ward assembly elections, 560 in city assembly elections, and 255 in town and village assembly elections). Women made up 44.7% of the successful JCP candidates.

On the other hand, the number of JCP seats in these assemblies decreased by 91 from the previous nationwide local elections four years ago. The JCP’s share of seats went down from 8.08% to 7.28%.

The JCP Standing Executive Committee on April 25 issued a statement in response to the election results. The statement points out that one of the factors for the regrettable election results was that the party fought the latest elections with the party strength lower than the 2019 level, and stated that this indicates that to achieve a 30% increase in party strength is an urgent and vitally important task.

Compared to four years ago, party membership declined by 9% and the readership of Akahata daily and Sunday editions fell by 13% and 15%, respectively.

The Executive Committee in its statement expressed its heartfelt appreciation to all voters who voted for JCP candidates as well as to JCP supporters, JCP supporters’ association members, and party members for their hard work.
