Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Kasai Akira on November 20 visited the Embassy of Iraq in Tokyo and held talks with Charge d'Affaires ad interim Wisam Abdulsattar Hassan Al-Saraf regarding the JCP statement calling for bringing a stop to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which was published earlier this month.
The Iraqi charge d’affaires ad interim welcomed Kasai’s visit. Regarding Israel’s attacks on Gaza, he advocated an immediate ceasefire by claiming that it is important for Israel to abide by international law. He noted that the Japanese government currently serves as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and will become a member of the UN Human Rights Council in January 2024, and expressed his hope that Japan will play a positive role in the international arena.
Kasai in response said that the JCP will work together with Iraq to put an end to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He explained that the JCP is demanding that the Japanese government recognize Israel’s attacks on Gaza as a breach of international humanitarian law and work to achieve an immediate ceasefire.
