Japanese Communist Party Chair Tamura Tomoko on March 19 held a press conference at the Japan National Press Club. After talking about her aim as the new JCP chair, she answered reporters’ questions regarding opposition parties’ joint struggle, JCP’s efforts to attract voters, and other topics.
Regarding opposition parties’ joint struggle, asked if the JCP will ally with the “Nippon Ishin no Kai” party and the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP), Tamura said that they are unacceptable as partners in the opposition parties’ joint struggles.
Tamura pointed out that the Ishin and DPFP in the Diet have pushed the government to move forward with its military buildup and Japan’s possession of an enemy base attack capability more aggressively than the Liberal Democratic Party. She said that the urgent need is to form an opposition parties’ coalition which focuses on putting an end to the LDP-led government.
Tamura said that in order to achieve this, the JCP will make all-out efforts to rebuild the joint struggles of opposition parties with concerned citizens.
Tamura said that it is important to establish a stronger opposition parties’ collaboration based on lessons learned from the unjust attacks by the LDP and Komei party in the 2021 general election. She said that the JCP will play a role in building stronger cooperation among opposition parties with its efforts to have people’s demands and movements converge in a national movement seeking to change politics.
As to a question about the JCP’s efforts to attract voters, Tamura said that the JCP will strengthen its efforts to let the people know about the JCP through various activities, including utilizing social media. Tamura noted that the JCP has put forth proposals for the livelihood and economic recovery, a diplomatic vision based on the war-renouncing Article 9 of the Constitution, and the realization of gender equality. She said, “I’d like to call on voters to work together with the JCP to realize these proposals and open a new era for Japan.”
