US military choppers make unauthorized landing on Fukushima City-owned property

April 27, 2024
A Fukushima citizens’ group and Japanese Communist Party members of the Fukushima Prefectural and city assemblies on April 25 made representations to the city government, demanding that the local authorities lodge with the Japanese government and the U.S. military a protest against the latest unauthorized landing by U.S. military aircraft in the city.

The incident occurred on April 17. Two U.S. UH-1 military helicopters stationed at the U.S. Yokota Air Base in Tokyo landed on a city-owned vacant lot in the mountains in Fukushima City without the city’s permission.

Civil group head Saito Tomooki said, “The unauthorized landing by U.S. military aircraft on the city-owned property is totally unacceptable. It is a matter of course for local residents to voice our anger at the incident and concern over safety. I strongly protest against the U.S. military intrusion.”
