Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Shii Kazuo on May 15 at the South Korean Embassy in Tokyo held talks with Ambassador Yun Dukmin.
Shii introduced the JCP “Proposals for Peace Creation in East Asia” which was published in April, and asked the ambassador to convey the proposals to his government.
Stating that the JCP pays close attention to the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), Shii said that the JCP proposals were made in light of the need to develop East Asia into an inclusive region, not an exclusive one. He added that in preparation for the proposals, the JCP kept in mind that the proposals should be acceptable for countries concerned.
Shii pointed out that Northeast Asia has unique challenges, such as the issue of North Korea’s nuclear and missile development and historical issues related to Japan’s past war of aggression. He said that the JCP drew up the “proposals” based on its position that these issues should be resolved through diplomatic channels.
Shii pointed out that the “proposals” give importance to the inclusivity of the East Asia Summit whose members include Japan, South Korea, the United States, and China. He said that the JCP takes notice of a Japan-China-South Korea summit meeting, which will be held late this month in South Korea, as an important framework for communication in Northeast Asia.
Shii and the ambassador exchanged views on peacebuilding in East Asia. They also exchanged views on historical issues as next year will mark 80 years since the end of WWII and 60 years since the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea.
