Eighty-three overseas delegates from 22 countries will come to Japan to participate in the 2011 World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs and its related events in discussions working for the abolition of nuclear weapons, scheduled for August in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The Organizing Committee on July 13 held a news conference to announce the conference schedule and the list of foreign participants.
Representatives from global NGOs for peace and anti-nuclear weapons as well as officials of governments and international organizations will engage in discussion regarding how to get the achievements of last May’s NPT Review Conference into shape.
Prospective participants include victims of nuclear tests and nuclear plant accidents. They will discuss ways to eradicate negative effects of radiation and support Hibakusha and other radiation sufferers such as those who have been affected by the Fukushima crisis.
Representing the Organizing Committee, Taka Hiroshi said at the press conference that he hopes the conference will be an opportunity for all the participants to discuss how to put international pressures on the world’s governments to start negotiations for a treaty banning nuclear weapons.
The International Meeting in advance of the main conference will take place on August 3-5 in Hiroshima, the 2011 World Conference against A and H Bombs/Hiroshima will be on August 5-6 followed by the Nagasaki Conference on August 7-9. Young people will organize an event “Ring! Link! Zero 2011” in Nagasaki on August 7 and a women’s peace gathering will also be held in Nagasaki on August 8.
