2011 November 9 - 15 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

Residents seek court order to shutdown Tsuruga reactors

November 9, 2011
On November 8, 47 residents filed a lawsuit with the Otsu District Court seeking a provisional order on the Japan Atomic Power Co. to cancel resumption of two reactors at its Tsuruga nuclear power plant in Tsugura City in Fukui Prefecture.

This action follows a similar court case filed by 168 people on August 2, urging Kansai Electric Power Co. not to restart its seven nuclear reactors.

Fukui Pref. is located next to Shiga Pref., where Lake Biwa is located, the source of water for 14 million people in the Kansai region.

Listing the risks of restarting the Tsuruga reactors, which are currently off-line due to regular inspection, the plaintiffs’ lawyer Yoshihara Minoru pointed out at a press conference that they have been operating for over 40 years and are located within 1km from active faults.

Plaintiffs’ leader Tuji Yoshinori said, “We hope that the court will act responsibly and make a judgment that meets the urgent concerns raised by the vast majority of residents.
