JCP visits embassies on issue of nuclear weapons abolition

May 27, 2009
Japanese Communist Party International Bureau Acting Director Nishiguchi Hikaru on May 26 visited the Russian Embassy and had talks with First Secretary Sergey Zhestkiy on the issue of the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Nishiguchi handed to Zhestkiy a copy of JCP Chair Shii Kazuo’s letter to U.S. President Barack Obama about the issue as well as a copy of the U.S. government letter of response.

Zhestkiy stated that the abolition of nuclear weapons is an important issue and that he considers Obama’s speech in Prague as a positive signal. He explained the current situation regarding negotiations between the U.S. and Russia for a new strategic arms reduction treaty and the Russian government’s activities toward the NPT Review Conference next year.

JCP member of the House of Representatives Kasai Akira on the same day visited the South Korean Embassy and met with Lee Hyuk, minister and deputy chief of mission. Kasai explained Shii’s letter to U.S. President Obama.

Lee stated that South Korea shares the call for a world without nuclear weapons. He said that Shii’s letter is very important and that he will certainly convey its message to the South Korean government.
