Hatoyama says DPJ will initiate discussions on constitutional revision if it takes power

April 25, 2009
Democratic Party Secretary General Hatoyama Yukio said that the DPJ is willing to promote discussions on constitutional revision if it takes power.

At a news conference on April 24, Hatoyama stated, “Amending constitutional provisions regarding governing systems and some other points should be discussed. It is a major responsibility of Dietmembers to initiate such discussions to push ahead with wider constitutional debates.”

Hatoyama said, “Under the Aso Cabinet, which is unstable with extremely low approval ratings, it is impossible to initiate full-fledged discussions even within the ruling parties.”

He also stressed that for revision of the Constitution, the DPJ must be in power over a long period of time because it will take a long time to solve the economic crisis and other mistakes in management made by the current cabinet.
