Fukushima Prefecture announced on February 27 that it will call on national and local governments to extend the lease period of housing units for evacuees from the nuclear power plant accident.
The announcement was made at a prefectural assembly meeting in response to Japanese Communist Party representative Abe Yumiko, who called for the prefectural government action so that victims of the nuclear accident evacuated outside of the prefecture can continue to stay where they are after the initial lease period expires at the end of March.
A prefectural government official stated that a request has been submitted to the national government to extend the lease period of private housing units in Fukushima, which is limited to two years under the Disaster Relief Act.
