The Association for a Non-Nuclear Government on March 24 discussed issues on nuclear weapons and nuclear power generation at a meeting in Tokyo to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its founding.
Representing a number of local associations, about 100 people took part in the meeting.
Ikeuchi Satoru, professor at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, gave a lecture entitled, “Shift from nuclear to renewable energy.”
He stated that now is a turning point in the use of non-renewable fossil energy sources such as uranium, oil, and coal to the use of renewable energy sources such as sunlight, water, and wind.
Providing examples of the renewable energy use in Germany, he said that it is necessary to proceed systematically with small, decentralized production of energy with a focus on local energy generation for local consumption, and local disposal of energy wastes if they are produced.
Aihara Hiroko, a freelance journalist living in Fukushima, reported on the Fukushima people’s continuing ordeal and efforts to survive from radiation contamination.
Niihara Shoji, an international affairs analyst, explained that the “peaceful use of atomic power” propaganda had emerged with U.S. military strategies attempting to use nuclear weapons in the Korean War and the Taiwan Straits disputes and this had also opened the path for the commercial use of nuclear power.
Niihara stated that this is the history behind why the Japanese and U.S. governments promoted the use of nuclear energy in Japan in disregard of its unproven technology and serious flaws in its safety.
