Tokyo residents on June 4 filed a case at the Tokyo District Court seeking a provisional injunction against the Ground Self-Defense Force’s ranger training exercise scheduled for June 12.
The training exercise will involve about 30 fully armed soldiers who will be transported by helicopters from the SDF Higashifuji training field in Shizuoka Prefecture to the Arakawa riverside in Tokyo, and they will then march 6.8 km to Camp Nerima.
The residents argue that the planned training exercise is clearly in “preparation for war”.
They point out that the inclusion of the populated district for the exercise by combat armed SDF personnel could cause an accident involving local residents and that the training exercise will undermine Tokyoites’ right to live in peace and infringe on their personal rights.
